Executive Summary

Building a Community-Driven Property Review Experience

Finding the right property to rent or purchase can be challenging, particularly in highly competitive urban property markets where prospective residents may have limited time to evaluate a property. Traditional property listings often provide basic information but may not capture the real-life experience of living in a particular property or neighborhood.

The project focused on creating a community-driven property review platform where existing or previous residents could share their experiences through structured ratings, detailed reviews and supporting information. Prospective tenants and buyers could then use these insights to better understand a property before making a decision.

The project involved UI/UX design and responsive web experience as well as a common codebase for Mobile and Web, with a strong focus on simplifying information-heavy journeys and creating consistent experiences across property discovery, review consumption and review submission.

Connecting Property Decisions with Real User Experiences

In competitive property markets, users often have very limited time to evaluate a property before deciding whether to rent or purchase it. While traditional property portals provide listing information, they may not provide enough insight into the practical experience of living in the property.

The platform was designed to introduce a community-driven feedback layer where people with first-hand experience could share their opinions and help future residents make more informed decisions.

Community-driven reviews

Existing or previous residents can share their experiences with properties and surrounding areas, creating a source of practical information for future users.

Detailed property insights

Instead of relying only on an overall rating, users can explore feedback across multiple categories to understand specific strengths and concerns.

Decision support

The platform brings together property information, ratings, reviews and location context to help users evaluate a property more confidently.

The Challenge

The Challenge

Making Detailed Property Information Easy to Understand

The key challenge was to create an experience that could handle a large amount of user-generated information without making the interface complicated. Users needed to quickly understand the overall sentiment while still being able to explore detailed feedback when required.

Limited decision-making time

Prospective tenants or buyers may need to make decisions quickly. Important information therefore needed to be immediately visible and easy to scan.

Large volumes of review information

Reviews could contain feedback across multiple aspects of a property, requiring a clear information hierarchy and structured presentation.

Detailed review submission

The review experience needed to capture meaningful information without making the process unnecessarily difficult or overwhelming for the user.

Multiple user states

The platform supported different experiences for logged-in and logged-out users. These states needed to remain visually consistent while providing the appropriate level of access.

Property discovery

Users needed a simple way to search for properties and understand their geographic context through the listing and map experience.

UX / Product Strategy

UX / Product Strategy

Designing Around the User’s Decision Journey

The UX approach was based on understanding how a prospective tenant or buyer would actually interact with the platform. Rather than presenting information as disconnected pages, the experience was structured around a natural decision-making journey.

Discover

Users can search for properties and browse available results based on property information and location.

The goal was to make the initial discovery process simple, allowing users to quickly identify properties that were relevant to them.

Explore

Once a property is identified, users can explore its available information, ratings and review activity.

The interface provides a clear hierarchy so that important information can be understood without requiring users to read every detail.

Understand

Users can then explore detailed ratings and community feedback to understand the experiences of existing or previous residents.

This provides additional context that may not be available through standard property listing information.

Compare

Structured ratings and category-based feedback allow users to evaluate different aspects of a property experience rather than relying only on a single overall score.

Decide

By bringing together property details, reviews, ratings and location information, the platform provides users with additional context to support their rental or purchase decision.

Solution & Key User Journeys

Solution & Key User Journeys

Property Discovery and Search

A dedicated property search and listing experience was designed to help users discover relevant properties efficiently. The search results provide key property information along with review availability and location context.

The experience combines list-based discovery with a map-based view, allowing users to understand both the property details and its surrounding geographic context.

Key Features

  • Property search
  • Search results listing
  • Property information
  • Review count
  • Rating visibility
  • Sorting options
  • Map-based discovery
  • Property view and review actions

This approach helps users move naturally from searching for a property to exploring the available community feedback.

Property Review Experience

The property detail experience was designed to present both high-level and detailed information in a structured format.

Users can quickly understand the overall rating and then explore category-level feedback when they need more information.

This layered approach prevents the page from becoming overwhelming while still allowing users to access deeper insights.

UI/UX Design

UI/UX Design

Creating a Consistent and Scalable Interface

UI/UX was an important part of the project, covering multiple journeys across the platform. The focus was not only on creating visually appealing screens but also on establishing a consistent experience across different types of content and interactions.

Clear visual hierarchy

Important information such as ratings, review counts and primary actions was given clear visual prominence.

Reusable UI patterns

Common elements such as rating controls, cards, buttons, forms and expandable sections followed consistent interaction patterns.

Structured information presentation

Large amounts of property and review information were divided into logical sections to make the content easier to scan.

Clear calls to action

Primary actions such as viewing a property, posting a review and submitting information were presented clearly within the relevant user journey.

Consistent interaction patterns

Similar interactions were designed to behave consistently throughout the platform, reducing the learning curve for users.

Review & Rating Experience

Review & Rating Experience

Converting User Feedback into Structured Insights

One of the core features of the platform was the detailed review experience. Instead of asking users to provide only a general comment or overall rating, the platform allowed feedback to be structured across multiple categories.

This approach makes community feedback easier to understand and gives future residents more useful information when evaluating a property.

Category-Based Ratings

Users could provide ratings across areas such as:

  • Overall satisfaction
  • Maintenance
  • Kitchen
  • Bathroom fixtures
  • Flooring and walls
  • Windows and doors
  • Electrical and plumbing
  • Air conditioning

Additional feedback areas could cover broader aspects such as the property, neighbourhood, landlord and agent experience.

Detailed Review Submission

The review form was designed to guide users through the process using structured questions, rating controls and optional written feedback.

Users could also provide supporting photographs where applicable, allowing them to add visual context to their experience.

The overall objective was to make the review process detailed enough to be valuable while structured enough to remain easy to complete.

Logged-In & Logged-Out Experience

Logged-In & Logged-Out Experience

Designing Consistent Experiences Across User States

The platform included different experiences depending on the user’s authentication state. The UX needed to ensure that users could understand the platform and its value regardless of whether they were logged in.

Logged-Out Experience

The logged-out experience focused on allowing users to discover properties and understand the available review information while clearly indicating where additional access or actions may require authentication.

This helped maintain a balance between content discovery and controlled access.

Logged-In Experience

Authenticated users could access a richer experience, including additional review information and user-specific actions.

Both experiences were designed using the same visual language, ensuring that the transition between states remained familiar and intuitive.

Risk Mitigation & Key Considerations

Risk Mitigation & Key Considerations

Balancing Information Depth with Usability

Because the platform relies heavily on user-generated content, one of the main design considerations was avoiding information overload. The experience needed to provide depth without making property pages difficult to navigate.

Information overload
Large volumes of ratings and reviews could make pages difficult to scan. Content was therefore grouped into logical categories with a clear hierarchy.
Complex review forms
A detailed review form can become lengthy. Related questions were grouped together and presented using consistent rating controls to make the process easier to follow.
Different user states
Logged-in and logged-out experiences needed to remain consistent. Shared UI patterns and content structures were maintained across both experiences.
Responsive usability
Property and review pages contain a significant amount of information. Responsive layouts were designed to ensure that content, controls and forms remained usable across different screen sizes.
Content clarity
Ratings, reviews and property information needed to be distinguishable at a glance. Visual hierarchy and consistent components helped users understand the information quickly.

Outcome & Impact

Outcome & Impact

Creating a More Informed Property Decision Experience

The resulting platform created a structured connection between property discovery and real-world community experiences.

The experience enabled users to:

  • Discover properties through search and map-based experiences.
  • Understand overall property sentiment through ratings.
  • Explore detailed category-level feedback.
  • Read experiences shared by existing or previous residents.
  • Submit structured reviews.
  • Add written feedback and supporting photographs.
  • Navigate different logged-in and logged-out experiences.
  • Access the platform across different screen sizes.

From a product perspective, the platform extended the traditional property listing experience by introducing a community-driven information layer.

From a UI/UX perspective, the project demonstrated how a content-heavy platform can be structured into clear and intuitive user journeys without compromising the depth of information available to users.

Key Learnings

Key Learnings

Complex Information Needs Strong Hierarchy

When a platform contains multiple categories of user-generated information, strong visual hierarchy is essential. Users should be able to understand the most important information quickly while having the option to explore deeper details.

Structured Feedback Creates More Value

Category-based ratings provide more context than a single overall score. They allow users to understand specific strengths and concerns associated with a property.

UX Should Reflect the User's Actual Goal

The experience was designed around the user’s real objective: finding a property, understanding other people’s experiences and making a decision. This helped keep individual screens connected to a larger user journey.

Responsive Design Requires Content Adaptation

For content-heavy platforms, responsive design is more than simply reducing screen size. Information hierarchy, controls, forms and layouts need to adapt to different viewing environments.

Consistency Supports Scalability

Reusable UI patterns and consistent interaction models make it easier to expand the platform with additional features while maintaining a familiar experience for users.

Conclusion

Conclusion

From Property Listings to Community Intelligence

The project created a community-driven property review experience that brings together property discovery, structured ratings, detailed reviews and location-based information.

By combining these elements into a single responsive platform, users could gain a broader understanding of a property through the experiences of people who had previously lived in or interacted with it.

The project also highlighted the importance of thoughtful UI/UX when working with information-heavy digital products. Through clear hierarchy, structured content, reusable components and responsive design, complex information was transformed into a more approachable and useful experience.

Ultimately, the platform aimed to make property decisions more informed, transparent and experience-driven, giving prospective residents additional context beyond what is typically available through standard property listings.
